Fiscal Policy

By Janet L Ryan

Candidate for Trustee; Fresno Unified School District; Trustee Area 6

This information is provided by the candidate
Our fiscal priorities can be viewed as three legs of a stool.
Our fiscal priorities can be viewed as the three legs of a stool, where each leg is necessary to keep the stool upright, steady and functional. While each leg of our stool is not of equal size, each leg is of equal importance in keeping Fresno Unified sound and on track to improving student achievement for all.

Our first leg of the budget is devoted to programs for improving learning for our students and for helping all adults in the system get better and better at what they do.

The second leg is salaries and benefits for employees. It is in everyone's best interest to keep and attract the best and brightest employees in every role. Our salaries and benefits are very competitive and we are working at creating a culture making Fresno Unified the employer of choice in the Valley.

While the third leg, the reserve, is much smaller in dollars than the other two, it is vitally important to maintain a healthy reserve to use for emergencies or when the state does not fund schools at the levels needed.
