Smart Voter Full Biography for Janet K. Miller

Candidate for
Board Member; Mill Valley School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I am co-founder of a special education PTA in Mill Valley called It Takes a Village. Initially the thought was to create a parent support group so that parents of students with learning differences could reach out to each other for support and resources. I recommended that we expand this vision and partner with the school district to create a new PTA. I have always believed that collaboration is the most effective way to accomplish change. Our membership is diverse and inclusive. Many who attend do not have children with learning disabilities; they simply want to learn more about strategies to strengthen their children's education.

In June 2007 I was the recipient of the Golden Bell Award in Marin County. The Golden Bell Award recognizes individuals that have contributed to programs, which are deemed essential to support teaching and learning.

I am Vice President of Northern California Claims for an insurance company that specializes in Workers' Compensation. I manage over 65 employees. I develop budgets and I am involved in long term strategic planning. On the personal side, our family moved to Mill Valley over ten years ago and we have two sons in the school system.
