Questions & Answers

1. There is growing support for reform of the Rockefeller drug laws. What will you do to: a.) Initiate significant reform of these laws; b.) Provide adequate financial support for programs, on the community level, designed to cope with the impact of such reform?

We reformed the Rockefeller drug laws, which imposed significant penalties for possession or sale of even small amounts of drugs, in 2004 by tying more serious crimes to tougher penalties. Proposals for additional reforms merit consideration. I support continued state funding for community programs that prevent and treat drug abuse.

2. What programs and actions will you support to protect communities from the negative consequences of the state’s increasing dependence on gambling revenue?

The state lottery, off-track betting, etc. generate a modest portion of all state revenues and reduce the need for taxes. I cosponsor legislation that would increase state funding for treatment programs for problem gamblers by adding revenues from a sales tax on casino advertising in New York State.
