Jared Huffman has dedicated his career to public service, including protecting California's environment and fighting for civil rights. As a Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a civil rights champion, and President of the Marin Municipal Water District Board of Directors, Jared is an experienced advocate on behalf of our environment, our democratic values, and our quality of life.

In his work at NRDC, Jared advocates for sustainable state and federal water policies, and engages in the full range of advocacy to protect California's rivers and the fish and wildlife that depend upon them. He also manages an historic effort by a coalition of environmental and fishing organizations to restore a healthy flow of water to the San Joaquin River, and allow wild salmon to once again thrive in California's second-longest waterway.

As a publicly elected board member and past three-term Board President of the Marin Municipal Water District, Jared has worked to protect Marin County's creeks, fisheries and drinking water for eleven years. His vision and dedication were recognized at the 2003 California Water Policy Conference, where he was presented with the Carla Bard Advocacy Award. The Marin Conservation League also recognized his work to restore local fisheries and promote water conservation by awarding him the 2002 Ted Welman Water Award.

Prior to joining NRDC, Jared was a highly successful trial lawyer specializing in public interest cases, and particularly in the area of civil rights. Among his many court victories was an historic case on behalf of the National Organization for Women (NOW) which required all campuses of the California State University to comply with Title IX, creating new athletic opportunities for thousands of female scholar-athletes throughout California. Other victories included a $1.3 million gender discrimination trial, a $1.6 million "whistle blower" trial, and a $2.2 million race discrimination trial.

Jared's work in the fields of politics and law was honored in 2000 with the "Millenium Leadership Award" presented jointly by the Marin Independent Journal and Marin Community Foundation.

Jared earned his B.A. in Political Science magna cum laude from U.C. Santa Barbara, and his law degree cum laude from Boston College Law School, where he received a commencement award for scholarship and leadership. Prior to law school, he was a three-time NCAA All-American athlete and member of the World Champion United States Volleyball Team. Jared lives in San Rafael with his wife Susan and their two children, Abigail (6) and Nathan (3).
