Physician and Nurse Shortage

By Donald E Newman

Candidate for District Director; Peninsula Health Care District

This information is provided by the candidate
There is a serious shartage of both Physicians and Nurses in our community. The district in the past several years has started to play a role in encouraging and helping both doctors and nurses to come to this community. We provide financial incentives to accomplish this. We can and should do more, as the shortage is serious and getting worse.
The most serious shortage of medical professionals is that of primary care physicians. The shortage is propelled by the high cost of housing and cost ofliving. This combined with a highly developed managed care system makes for a very serious negative impact. The more we can do to help counter this impact the better. We have started to be supportive of nursing education at the local level. This needs to continue and be expanded to insure that our local hospital and community programs have an adequate supply of well trained professionals.
