A fifth-generation Californian, I live in rural Cayucos with my wife, Grace Crittenden. We have two sons, Brian, 22, and Scott, 18. I was born in 1952 and grew up in the San Fernando Valley. My family moved to Santa Barbara when I was in high school.

After attending Pomona College, I completed my master's degree in geophysics at the University of Hawaii. In 1976 I took a job in Houston doing research in exploration seismology. After 8 years there, I then helped establish a seismic exploration program at Rice University, where I also completed my doctorate in geophysics.

In 1989, our family moved to Cambria. Since 1990, we have owned a ranch in rural Cayucos, where I have farmed the county's oldest commercial orange grove.

Off the ranch, I have been active in a number of community organizations including,

  • Various committees of the Cambria and Cayucos schools,
  • The Cayucos Citizens Advisory Council,
  • The Boards of the Land Conservancy of SLO County and the Cayucos Land Conservancy, and
  • Hearst Ranch Conservation NOW. I have served SLO County on the Ag Preserve Review Committee and am currently the Planning Commissioner for District 2.

I enjoy a wide variety of outdoor recreation, especially any activity in, on, or under the water. I also have my pilot's license and feel especially lucky to be able fly over SLO County.
