POSITIONS ON SOME ISSUES

By Theodore "Ted" Ehring

Candidate for Council Member; City of Pismo Beach; 2 Year Term

This information is provided by the candidate
I wish to represent my thoughts on a few of the prominent issues facing Pismo Beach, at this time, which impact the future of our pricesless City.
ISSUE ONE: DOWNTOWN MUNICIPAL PARKING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE DOWNTOWN COMMERCIAL CORE AND SURROUNDING AREA

A recent study demonstrated that without the Benson (Dirt) Lot, soon to be unavailable for parking, we have a need for a minimum of 271 additional parking spaces in the "Downtown Core."

Commercial Projects should be required to provide onsite parking. We must investigate mixed use options with subterranean parking for maximum advantage to all.

The Benson property developers have offered the city, for no additional fee, the ability to build a subterranean municipal parking structure beneath their project. Acceptance of this offer must be made in a timely fashion.

ISSUE TWO: PROPOSED INCREASE IN THE SALES TAX

We would not benefit from increased Sales Tax, at this time. City Staff and consultants have determined this. No objective proof exists that a large revenue increase is necessary, especially if it will negatively impact our consumer and tourist purchases.

The City should explore more efficient mechanisms to collect Transient Occupancy Tax (Bed Tax), and adopt policies that allow certain businesses to operate from home, while efficiently collecting existing fees.

Increasing city revenues is important, but we must be careful in how it is accomplished.

ISSUE THREE: MUNICIPAL GOVERANCE

I believe that, as a Council member, it will be my obligation to thoroughly review and educate myself on all issues that come before the Council. It is not enough to voice an opinion, you must voice an informed and considered view of issues, and consider deeply the impact that such any action may have on both the present needs and the long term effects.

In dealing with others, I believe in collaboration and rational compromise, not with negativity or competition. Those who commit to public service should do so selflessly, and accept the challenge to participate in a cooperative governance, with an open mind, a willingness to put forth great effort, and an understanding that they are the stewards of their constituency.

I take this opportunity to serve the citizens of Pismo Beach most seriously, and am firmly committed to helping to safely and sanely bring the City into the 21st Century, with well planned development and a promise to maintain our coastal beauty and natural resources.
