PERSONAL INFORMTION:

My family has lived in El Cajon since 1979. I have been married for 37 years and have 3 children, now grown, who attended Cajon Valley schools (K-8) and Valhalla High School. I attended Occidental College in Los Angeles and San Diego State University, where I graduated with a B.A. and an elementary teaching credential. I taught second grade in a nearby school district before starting our family and moving to El Cajon.

As my children went through school, I was an active volunteer in their school PTA's and Site Councils at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. I also became very involved in District-wide committees including the Year-Round Task Force and the Superintendent's Advisory Committee, among others.

I was initially elected to the Cajon Valley School Board in 1990.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND: I have been an active volunteer as well as professional consultant in substance abuse prevention and education at the local, county and state levels for more than 23 years.

My work in substance abuse prevention includes:

  • Facilitator for the Drug, Alcohol, Tobacco Education program in Cajon Valley (1988-1990) until elected to the Cajon Valley School Board;
  • Drug Prevention Specialist and trainer with the San Diego County Office of Education's Safe Schools Unit (1991-1992);
  • Founding member of El Cajon Community Against Substance Abuse (1987-1997), and the San Diego Prevention Coalition (1991-2000)- I served as President for both organizations;
  • Prevention education consultant/trainer with the State Dept. of Alcohol and Drug Programs (1996-2000);
  • Trainer/technical advisor for Telesis, II Corp. (1998-2000);
  • Member and current chair of the Board of Directors for Californians for Drug-Free Youth (CADFY) (1997-present);
  • Appointed by Supervisor Dianne Jacob to the County's Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board where I served as Board Chair for several years (1993-98);
  • Member of the County's Methamphetamine Task Force (1996-1998).
