Small schools

By Tania Bowman

Candidate for Board Member; Escondido Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Small schools work.
Extensive research shows that small schools are more successful in creating effective learners. Small schools provide a more engaging and personal environment that encourages discussion, exploration, creativity and collaborative thinking and learning. Because students are connected to the adults and their peers in small settings, the drop out rate is substantially reduced, discipline problems decrease and the rate of graduation and college enrollment is increased. To date our current school board has shown little commitment to alleviating overcrowding by building several small schools. The concept of creating small schools within large schools, although certainly an improvement to the 50-acre comprehensive school model, is not the ideal plan especially for at risk students.
