Better Funding and Class Size Reduction

By Don Maxwell

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Cruz City High School District; Area 2

This information is provided by the candidate
Large class size hinders learning and limits program offerings
Small class sizes play an essential role in student learning. Small classes allow more individual attention from the teacher that translates into higher student achievement. Classes in our 4th, 5th grades, middle schools and high schools are too large; many have 35 or more students. Both teachers and students are negatively impacted by this condition. Class size reduction is not inexpensive and will require financial assistance from Sacramento. California is one of the wealthiest states in the nation, but is near the bottom in educational funding. If we are committed to all students achieving, we must do better.
