Important Issues Facing Our Schools

By John E. Hinden

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Maria-Bonita School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Safety of the children in classrooms has been compromised due to financial mistakes
If elected what will I bring to office: I want to bring accountability back to this BOE. I have attended school board meetings for the past 1.5 years and have seen this BOE ignore, misrepresent, or refuse to respond to public inquiries. As an attorney and self-employed businessman in this community for over 20 years, I know when someone comes to my office and asks a question an answer is expected. This community should expect/demand answers to their questions. I bring experience dealing with people and their legal problems. Exactly the issues the current BOE faced with TurnKey and failed to address.

Important Issues Facing Our Schools/Community: We have overcrowded classrooms, combination classes, and students being bussed to other schools. Because of the financial losses suffered by the District from the TurnKey fiasco, there are insufficient teachers/staff and physical facilities available to prevent this. The safety of our children is compromised when they are crowded into classrooms which create a stressful environment for students and teachers. The Superintendent talks of the need to "balance classrooms", but the trustees are out of touch with reality when they do not question what "balancing classrooms" means.

Why am I seeking this office: It is evident to me the public is not aware of the financial loses suffered by this District, and its impact on the students. I want the public to be informed and have confidence that the BOE is doing its job for the children.
