Declining Enrollment and School Closures

By Greg A. Paulo

Candidate for Board Member; San Juan Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
San Juan Unified must encourage students to enroll by offering alternative opportunities, as the Mira Loma High School IB program that will attract students from other districts. These programs must include college preparatory tracks, vocational/industrial arts, agriculture/FFA, arts, music, and athletics. A return to strong vocational education programs is a necessity. Years ago, most major cities in California had a technical high school. It's time to put to rest the myth that every student aspires to college. We lose students each year because of this misconception coupled with the lack of true vocational educational programs. Only when we embrace all students and their needs will we increase enrollment.

Once the district addresses the declining enrollment and facilities concerns will we be able to avoid closing schools. I understand that neighborhood schools offer much more than an education to your child. Schools build character, cohesiveness, and camaraderie within the neighborhood. Schools are a community unto themselves. Therefore, I will do everything to ensure that school closures are considered only as a last resort.
