School Board Service

By Kerry J. Steed

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Mother Lode Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
School trustees have three main obligations.
Service on a school board is not about partisan political power or personal political power. School board service is focused on the students in the school district. A school board member has power only when acting with a quorum of the board in an official meeting. The job of school trustees is threefold. First, the board sets policy for the district. Policy provides direction for all employees and students in the district. Secondly, the board must oversee and approve the budget including all expenses of the district used for the support and education of its students. The board must be the eyes and ears for the community as it oversees the spending of millions of dollars of taxpayer money used to educate our children each year. Finally, the board alone hires the district superintendent who directs the board's policies and manages all district endeavors. Being part of a school board is a privilege that allows a person to "give back" to the community through meaningful service.
