About Joanne

Joanne Wile spent 10 years running public health services for San Francisco's Public Health Department, where she served as Director of Community Services. In her work, she was decorated for cost effectiveness, high staff morale, and state of the art emergency preparedness. She was awarded the American Psychiatric Association Achievement Award, the UCSF Outstanding Performance Award, and the LPPI-UCSF Alumni-Faculty Association Interdisciplinary Achievement Award. Joanne holds B.A. and M.S.W. degrees from U.C. Berkeley. Joanne currently serves on the Albany Parks & Recreation Commission and the steering committee for Citizens for the Albany Shoreline. She is endorsed by the Sierra Club and Citizens for the Albany Shoreline.

In her own words:

I have lived and worked in the Bay Area all of my adult life. 35 years in public health give me experience in city planning, administering and designing programs involving millions of dollars, directing emergency preparedness and security services, and overseeing staff training and development.

I live in Albany because it is a special community. My partner and I participate in school and community activities involving the 23 children and 6 seniors on our block.

I am deeply concerned that our quality of life is threatened by Magna Entertainment's developer-driven proposals for the waterfront. As Parks and Recreation Commissioner, I have urged community-based solutions for city issues. Albany needs to have a citizen-driven plan for the waterfront. We can plan thoughtfully for ourselves and for future generations, developing effective ways to increase our tax base; revitalize our downtown, and fund our schools, libraries, and emergency services. Albany can lead the way as a green community, developing local renewable energy resources and technology.
