Rocky's Story

Rocky Delgadillo grew up in a working-class family on the East Side of Los Angeles. He attended public schools, including Franklin High School and graduated with Honors from Harvard University. After a brief stint in the Canadian Football League, Rocky returned to L.A. to teach and coach at his old high school. Later, he received a law degree from Columbia Law School in New York City, and became a senior attorney at O'Melveny & Meyers in Los Angeles where Warren Christopher became his mentor. After the 1992 civil unrest in Los Angeles, Rocky was tapped by Christopher to join Re-Build L.A as Director of Business Development. Serving under Peter Ueberroth, Rocky helped raise half a billion dollars in private funds to rebuild neglected neighborhoods and create jobs in inner-city Los Angeles.

Due to his success at Re-Build L.A., Rocky became Deputy Mayor of Economic Development where he led the city's efforts to create jobs and economic growth. Rocky found that gangs and violence were the biggest obstacles in bringing jobs, opportunity and hope to Los Angeles neighborhoods and decided to run for Los Angeles City Attorney to put the force of law behind those neighborhoods and residents that need it the most.

Rocky lives in Los Angeles with his wife Michelle and their two young boys, Christian and Preston.

The Delgadillo Record

As City Attorney, Rocky Delgadillo has taken the lead in prosecuting Los Angeles neighborhoods, schools and families: His Neighborhood Prosecutor Program takes prosecuters out of downtown offices and puts them in neighborhoods, walking the beat with police officers and tackling quality of life issues to help prevent crime. Rocky has nearly tripled the number of gang injunctions, keeping over 11,000 gang members off the corners of our neighborhoods. Created Operation Bright Future, a tough anti-truancy program with a 99% success rate, that holds parents responsible for keeping their children in school. By greatly reducing the city's liability in civil litigation cases, Rocky has saved millions of dollars that have been used to hire additional police officers. Rocky's innovative "No Secrets" program provides children, parents and teachers with the training to identify signs of sexual abuse and potential sexual abusers.

The Los Angeles City Attorney, like the California Attorney General, serves as both prosecutor and as civil lawyer. Rocky's office prosecutes over 90,000 cases a year and he's secured a 94% conviction rate, the highest in the office in over a decade.

Success on the Campaign Trail

In 2001, Rocky became the highest-ranking Latino elected to citywide office in Los Angeles in over 100 years. Delgadillo's huge upset victory brought together a diverse coalition of African American, Jewish, Valley Republican, Westside progressive, and Latino voters. In March 2005, Delgadillo faced no opposition in his bid for re-election.

Political Strength

In his successful City Attorney campaigns, Delgadillo demonstrated significant fundraising muscle. He spent over $2.5 million in his first campaign for City Attorney and $1.3 million in his re-election.

Rocky raised $1.5 million in his first 100 days as a candidate for Attorney General + outpacing his opponent, Jerry Brown, who raised $1.1 million during the entire six-month reporting period.

National Journal's Hotline called Rocky "The New Latino Democratic Star" and Roll Call wrote, "It's hard to find a political observer in the Golden State who doesn't think he had the brightest of political futures."
