An energy policy based on efficiency and the use of renewables

By Carl L. Mariz

Candidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 70

I support an energy policy that stresses efficiency and the use of renewable resources such as solar and wind. We must continue to insist that auto makers provide fuel efficient and pollution-free cars. Our recent energy crisis requires reregulating our power generation industry.
I support an energy policy that stresses efficiency and the use of renewable resources such as geothermal, solar and wind. These sources must contribute a significant fraction of our total power consumption. There are already a number of commercial installations of these kinds but more development is needed. Federal and private development funds (no state) should be used to fund studies and pilot projects. Another source of power is methane gas from landfills. This gas can be used as a source of fuel for power generation using lithium carbonate or solid oxide fuel cells presently under development.

We must continue to insist that auto makers provide fuel efficient and pollution-free cars. The best use for California tax funds to subsidize autos is the hybrid vehicle that runs on a combination of gasoline and batteries. These vehicles get achieve significantly better mileage that conventional autos. Owners of hybrids should receive a tax break on their auto tags (33% for instance) and should be allowed unlimited use of the carpool lanes. No state money should be used for hydrogen-based fuel cell cars. Hydrogen fuel and the fuel cell are far from being commercially viable, not withstanding the statements of our Governor and President.

Our recent energy crisis requires reregulating our power generation industry. We must never again allow greedy power companies to gouge California energy consumers.

We must also improve the energy efficiency of electric and gas appliances as light bulbs, vacuum cleaners, water heaters, etc. A significant savings in energy consumption can be achieved in this way. New homes should also be well insulated to minimize heating and cooling requirements. Older homes should also improve insulation where possible.
