Candidate for
Director; Proposed Cayucos Community Services District

This information is provided by the candidate

I am running for CSD Director in order to have a voice in its opposition. I have lived two blocks from downtown Cayucos all my life. I used to play near downtown as a child when you never saw a car out past 8:00. My Father started what became Boyle Lumber Company and he also used to own the Shoreline Motel, when it was just little beach cabins on the sand. Cayucos is my true home, where I grew up, and where all my childhood memories lie. I have watched Cayucos change a lot recently.

As to my business background, I currently operate 3 businesses. My main focus these days is as a Real Estate Appraiser. I also own the H&R Block Franchise in Morro Bay and I've held a real estate Broker License for the last 23 years. I guided tours around the Western States for 9 years when I was a young man, before I married. I spent 11 years helping the local Little League as a Coach, Fund Raiser and Board Member. I was a member of the Cayucos Lyon's Club during the 70's. I also announce all the home football games at Coast Union High School in Cambria.

As to the CSD, and after spending a lot of time reviewing all the factual information, I don't think I could think up with a better way to divide and bring city ways to this little town. The backbiting, the infighting, and the hard feelings are already starting to mount. Too much power in the hands of too few is the perfect breeding ground for lots of problems. It hurts me to no end to have to be involved in this at all.

It seems this all got started when some among us, that have a need to govern the lives of others, finally realized that the Advisory Council does not have any real power. About then, LAFCO came along. LAFCO is a state funded and mandated program that's ONLY function is to form CSD's. The next thing many locals were aware of was a petition being circulated around town to put this idea on the Ballot. The main reason the signers I spoke with were given, as an inducement to sign, was that a CDS would save us hundreds of thousands of dollars. Since then, any one that has looked at this seriously has seen that a CSD will actually cost more money, not less.

In my opinion, we have gone through all this time, effort and expense under false pretenses. I believe if the people that signed the original petition fully understood that the formation of a CSD would mean replacing all our current board members with just 5 people with no experience in managing and planning our local service needs, I don't think 300 signatures could have ever been gathered. Please, let's leave Cayucos as it is. We are doing fine and have small, efficient, dedicated and focused Local Leadership......why change to an ill-advised and potentially, very costly unknown?
