What can we, as a community, do to increase the supply of jobs in Paso Robles?

By Gary A. Nemeth

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Paso Robles

This information is provided by the candidate
It is time for our community to embrace the future and develop new and innovative ideas on housing, employment, the global economy/market place and remember that our citizens want and need to work and are the most productive workers in the world.
In order to be more successful, we must continue to develop a vibrant economy that encourages local enterprise and promotes stable employment. We must also make sure that our economic development helps to increase social equity. I continue to promote an integrated approach to the job market where all the citizens of Paso Robles, the youth, middle class and seniors are able to find a place to live and work. Local government, business, educational institutions and our citizens should work together to create our vibrant local economy through a long-term investment strategy in both the business interest and the human aspects of wanting to work. Our City must take every opportunity to form partnerships that include the public sector and the private sector working together. The council must encourage local enterprise to remain and expand their services and needs and by doing so the work force will also increase. We must promote stable and increasing revenues by promoting the local competitive advantages.

Business leaders are learning that the retention of senior employees who have established themselves as a valuable component to the business is being retained. Some businesses are also offering classes to their employees to develop the employee into an asset. Cuesta College and our Recreation Department are offering classes to improve job skills to meet the demand of a changing need in the business enviromnemt and offering additional courses that will expand workers job skills. The business owners and our work force must both realize that change can be considered an opportunity, and both must take advantage of it. Norman Vincent Peale said: "Change your thoughts and you change the world." It is time for our community to embrace the future and develop new ideas on housing, employment, the global economy/market place and our citizens that want and need to work and remember that our citizens are the most productive and innovative in the world.

I am working with the Airport Development Committee to research businesses that are in need of space for development and attempting to help direct them to the airport. One of the ways to increase jobs is to bring in NEW business or have existing business expand their base. In order to be competitive the City should be involved in helping businesses to expand and relocate.

One goal is to re-establish an economic development position that will go to where the business communities are and promote Paso Robles as a place to relocate their business. I have suggested several times that our City needs an economic development plan for the Airport that can be followed. I believe that developing the airport and assisting existing businesses to expand will create new jobs and that is what our community needs.
