By Gregory Bates

Candidate for Director; Cambria Community Healthcare District

This information is provided by the candidate
Staffing, location & public support
The district's primary responsibility is to provide emergency medical services and transport to a very large area of the north coast. Response times and hospital follow-up can cause our ambulance to be unavailable for extended periods of time. The present system of back-up personnel depends on availability of employees who live locally or move-up coverage by San Luis Ambulance Company. Both procedures cause delays in responses to a second incident.

In addition, many employees including the administrator are nearing retirement age. We face a potentially serious loss of experience and ability to quickly staff a second unit.

The current Healthcare District's building and its location are inadequate. Response times are compromised by its distance from the primary artery, Hwy 1 and by having to drive down Main St. through traffic and narrow streets. In addition the building cannot house the ambulance leaving it out in the weather.

Finally, the Healthcare District's monthly board meetings are poorly attended by our citizenry. This is a tax and fee supported special district with a large budget. It provides a vital service to the citizens along the north coast. It should generate more public interest.
