A River Park Serves Many Purposes

By Peter N Nelson

Candidate for Board Member; Lakeside Community Planning Area

This information is provided by the candidate
A river park will not only improve the character of Lakeside but also improve the quality of the enviroment.
The San Diego River which runs through Lakeside on its way to the Pacific Ocean has long been a dominant feature in Lakeside topography. Over the past 30 years it has been badly abused and polluted by various commercial uses. A river park would restore the natural riparian habitat and serpentine flow of the river.

The benefits of the park are at least three-fold:

First, by cleaning up the river the purity of the water would improve. This is vitally important to the quality of the massive aquifer which lies below and supplies a portion of the water to our community.

Second, it will provide improved habitat for the wildlife of the area bringing the ecosystem back into balance and enhancing the rural character which has been eroded by development.

Third, a resource for community involvement. Boating and fishing,multi-use trails, recreational and educational facilities will be created which will be a destination of beauty for people from all over the area and point of pride locally. This can only serve to help our local economy.
