Maintaining the beauty and charm of Del Mar

By Carl B. Hilliard

Candidate for Council Member; City of Del Mar

This information is provided by the candidate
Restoring the San Dieguito Lagoon and River Park, removing the train tracks to I-5, preserving and protecting our beaches, turning the Winston school site into a recreational park and preserving the scale of our neighborhoods are my goals.
There are at least 16 permits now required before the San Dieguito Lagoon can be restored, a number of which will require public hearings. The permit process is not self executing and can run into delays, difficulties and problems. My promise is to do my best to make sure that the dream we all share happens.

The recommendation of the City Council was to bore a tunnel under Del Mar and to build double track trestles over the lagoons. Citizens were not able to see the Draft EIR report and instead referred to a web site where the report could be found. It takes over four minutes to download this report using a high-speed internet line and virtually impossible with a dial-up line. I obtained a copy which is available in the library. Citizens have until October 25 to comment. I urge everyone to file comments in favor of locating the train tracks on I-5.

The City Council has been spending money on studies to construct a new city hall, fire station and other structures on the Winston school site. This is a radical departure from the Community plan and unwanted by most of the residents. The obvious and best use of this property is for a recreational center and preservation of the grass fields for sports.

Call me at (858) 509-2938 or e-mail me at chilliard@sbcglobal.net if you have other ideas. Let's work together to develop a focused strategy to achieve our goals.
