History of my commitment to Carlsbad

By Ofelia E. "Ofie" (Sainz) Escobedo

Candidate for Council Member; City of Carlsbad

This information is provided by the candidate
My family arrived in Carlsbad in 1943. I graduated from Oceanside-Carlsbad College in 1950. I was honored in 1994 as one of their Distinguished Alumni. My work experience started at an early age as a field worker, my first real job was in the Ordnance Department for the Fallbrook Ammunition Depot, I worked for Beckman Instruments in their Corporate Offices in La Habra, California and retired from McDonnell Douglas Huntington Beach in 1985. My sisters and I took over the family business "Lola's Market and Deli" in 1986. What is unique about me is that I have grown with Carlsbad, I have lived the history and the changes. My vision includes wanting to see the city move in a healthy direction and improving and enhancing the beautiful city that we live in.

Because of my involvement in civic affairs, I have seen the success of many projects, such as the Library's Centro de Informacion (project that won the Helen Putnam award for excellence) and the Youth Enrichment Services (Y.E.S)that was instrumental in helping teenage mothers go back to school. The North County Latina Women who hold a workshop once a year for young Latina ladies to encourage them to stay in school and recently Encuentros to encourage young Latinos to stay in school. Fiesta Del Barrio Carlsbad, that was formed for the purpose of highlighting the history, culture and accomplishments of our early pioneers and who now have formed a scholarship committee for the purpose of issuing scholarship to students of our Carlsbad Village Academy. Chamber University, a leadership program that was formed to help businesses.

As a result of my involvement I have received numerous awards from the business community. North County Times Woman of Merit Award; Chamber of Commerce Master Mead Award; North County Outstanding Latina Leader; Mexican Heritage Foundation 100 Portraits of Pioneers, Visionaries and Role Models; Mira Costa College Distinguished Alumni; Certificate of Recognition from the National Association of Women Business Owners and recently the Hero Award.
