Accomplishments and Future Directions

By Marty Block

Candidate for Board Member; San Diego Community College District; District D

This information is provided by the candidate
"Under Marty's leadership, the past four years have been among the most successful in the District's history. Marty has been an outstanding board president and forceful advocate for San Diego. He demonstrates remarkable leadership, vision, openness and accountability to the public."
-Chancellor Emeritus Augie Gallego

"Last year Marty led the Prop S fight that raised millions of dollars for needed community college improvements. This year he successfully battled to bring millions of additional equalization dollars from Sacramento to San Diego to expand opportunities for our students and boost San Diego's economy. That is why he has such broad support."
-Chancellor Constance Carroll

WHAT HAS MY BOARD ACCOMPLISHED IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS?

WE HAVE ENHANCED WORKFORCE EDUCATION TO CREATE JOBS AND STRENGTHEN OUR ECONOMY.

WE HAVE EXPANDED OUR COURSE OFFERINGS FOR POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS, NURSES AND MILITARY PERSONNEL.

WE HAVE INCREASED ACCESS TO COLLEGE EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS DESPITE BUDGET CUTS.

WE HAVE FACILITATED CONTINUOUS GROWTH IN ENROLLMENT, CAREER TRAINING AND UNIVERSITY TRANSFER RATES.

WE HAVE BUILT NEW, "STATE OF THE ART" CLASSROOMS AND LABORATORIES.

WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY FOUGHT FOR NEW FUNDING FROM SACRAMENTO.

WE HAVE USED TAX DOLLARS WISELY, REDUCED WASTE AND BEEN ACCOUNTABLE TO OUR CONSTITUENTS.

WE HAVE TREATED OUR STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES WITH FAIRNESS, DIGNITY AND RESPECT.

During my four year tenure as a member and President of the Board of Trustees of the San Diego Community College District, I have played a leadership role in forging significant change in three overarching, interrelated areas.

1. The District has experienced a dramatic improvement in its working/learning environment, culminating in a groundbreaking resource allocation agreement with its employees.

2. The District has initiated an unprecedented program to update and expand campus facilities following the successful passage of Proposition S ($685 million bond measure).

3. The District has realized a much-needed expansion of its ongoing revenue base as a result of aggressive and effective advocacy for "equalization" funding.

On the basis of these fundamental improvements in the District's climate and financial health, it is now well-positioned for substantial strategic growth over the next decade.
