Official Candidate Statement

By Michael J. Verrengia

Candidate for Board Member; Westminster School District

This information is provided by the candidate
This is the statement I placed in the voter pamphlet that will be mailed in October
I support the recall of the current Board majority and have been working to change the current direction of our district.

During my prior service as your School Board Trustee, we accomplished a great deal. With our School District in crisis, we must restore the District's educational priorities and return the focus to the classroom.

While I served on the Board:

  • Westminster was the first California school district to scrap bilingual education and adopt the "English immersion" method of teaching English. Our success rate was double the state average and the highest in Orange County.

  • Our school facilities were in top rate condition.

  • We enjoyed a low 20-1 student to teacher ratio in grades K-3.

  • The District changed to Basic Math and "Phonics" style language arts.

  • We were one of the few Districts that offered a well rounded curriculum including music, art and our Beckman science program.

  • I am supported by the Westminster Teachers, CSEA Chapter #34, retired Superintendent Dr. Barbara DeHart, former School Board member Nancy Blumenthal, Mayors Pro Tem Andy Quach and Bill Dalton, councilmembers Kermit Marsh and Van Tran, the Westminster Recall Committee and many District parents. A full list of endorsements is available upon request.

I have completed the California School Board Association's "Masters of Boardsmanship" and "Masters of Governance" training programs for School Board members.
