How to keep test scores on the rise

By Michael H. Simons

Candidate for Board Member; Huntington Beach Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Articulation and quality teachers are an important component in keeping high test scores district-wide.
One of the most immportant components in keeping our test scores on the rise is articulation with our four feeder elementary districts. By providing a seemless continuum of educational programs, especially in reading and math, our students' transiton to high school will be more successful. Also, this will help raise our ninth-grade test scores.

Another area that has a direct effect on scores is that of the teachers. We need to continue to attract and retain the best-qualified personnel available. The District also needs to support, mentor and encourage continuing education and continued competance for our newly hired staff. Almost 40% of our teachers have been hired during the last five years.

All programs that have direct student benefit should take priority. We need to place as much funding as possible into the classroom. Studies have shown that reading and comprehension have the most impact on student success. We need to continue the 90% approval rating from our last parent survey.
