Why am I running?

By Don Schweitzer

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Brea

This information is provided by the candidate
I am often asked why I am running for city council. Why am I putting myself through seemingly constant criticism at council meetings all for what amounts to a volunteer job. Believe me I have asked myself that same question and I always seem to come up with the same reason, in a nut shell, I care. I care about Brea's future. I care about keeping Brea the quality, unique, safe community it is and I believe I, in some small way, can contribute to that future. A future that my two daughters will be better off in because I cared and spent the time to get involved.

I truly believe each candidate has their version of what's best for Brea at heart. I believe we all care and I applaud each and every one for stepping up to sacrifice time and energy to give back to their community. I also believe that the best way to judge a candidate's future performance is to look back at their past performance and see what they have done for the community they now want to serve.

I am very proud of my past performance and what I have accomplished for Brea and its citizens. I am very proud of my 95 year heritage and what my grandfather and father did for Brea before me. But now we must look to the future remembering and learning from our past but not dwelling in it. We must move forward and make decisions for the betterment of all Breans.

I have done just that as a planning commissioner for the past 6 years. I have used my education, my experience and my desire to build a better Brea in my decision making process. I have repeatedly offered my time and talents to such organizations as the Boys and Girls Club in their bid for a new recreational center. The Scouts for their plan on creating the first Boy and Girl Scout Center in the nation and being the driving force behind the creation of the Brea Museum and Heritage Center. I have been a Lions Club officer and member for over twelve years, receiving their highest honor, a Melvin Jones Fellow, in 2001. I am a member of the Brea Art Association, have been on numerous advisory committees and created Brea History Day for Mariposa's third graders, which is now in its fourth year.

My past performance shows my dedication to Brea and its citizens and I feel proves I can get the job accomplished. Sitting on the City Council is just one more step in helping to build a better community. As a Councilmember I hope to accomplish even more for Brea. What happened to our 4th of July fireworks show we all enjoyed so much? Where is there a memorial to the 24 fallen Breans that died in war preserving our freedom?

What can be done to stop our downtown businesses from constantly closing and what can we do to insure its success?

Traffic, responsible development, Senior Citizen and landfill issues are all in the forefront and in need of balanced decisions. I will work hard with my fellow council members to come up with the best possible solution for every citizen of Brea.

Ronald Reagan once said, "Do what is right and politics will take care of itself". I can't say it any better than that. I will try and do what is right.

I would be honored to have your vote on Nov. 2

Thank you.
