Say NO to a RV storage facility at Curtis Park.

By Nancy Howell

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Mission Viejo

This information is provided by the candidate
Placing a RV storage facility at Curtis Park or any park would be improper and irresponsible zoning.
During the September Mission Viejo City Council meeting, an item was placed on the agenda to buiild a RV storage facility for over 300 vehicles at lower Curtis Park. It was disappointing to learn that our elected officials were clearly in favor of a RV storage facility next to a children's ball park. During this meeting, Mr. Green and Mr. Garcia (the owners of a R.V. storage facility in Garden Grove) were requesting the Council to allow them to develop the RV storage facility at Curtis Park.

Now, let's look realistically at the facts of having such a storage facility next to Curtis Park. First, for arguments sake, let us assume that there were no special interests at play, politically speaking, regarding the RV storage facility and that the storage facility was legitimately considered. Why are we allowing a RV storage facility to be placed in a neighborhood recreation area for children? There are (1) safety issues, (2) traffic concerns, (3) a decline in our property values, and (4) potential crime to consider.

Isn't a RV storage facility a potentially dangerous situation for our children? Do we want to place an RV storage facility next to a children's park to give a sexual predator an extra opportunity to commit a crime upon our youth using the empty and unoccupied RV's at the storage facility? As a parent of two young children who use the park, I seriously oppose this irresponsible proposal and urge parents to join me.

Next, I am concerned that such a facility with over 300 RV's will impact our already overburdened infrastructure with increased traffic in the neighborhood from trips generated to and from the facility. Additionally, this storage facility will create the potential of causing serious traffic injury to our children because they share the same driveway.

Another problem with a RV storage facility located next to a park and neighborhoods is the crime levels associated with any type of storage facility.

Finally, is it prudent urban planning to so drastically and incompatibly mix the usage of zoning which will drastically lower property values?

Please don't get me wrong, as a long-term RV owner, I don't have a problem with a storage facility in an appropriately zoned area. However, locating an RV storage facility next to a children's recreational area is unacceptable! It only takes one tragic incident to loose a child. Our children are not replaceable! And, don't forget, studies show that placing uses like a RV storage facility next to a residential area lowers property values. This placement of a RV storage facility in the appropriately zoned area would be deemed responsible urban planning.
