My political philosophy reflects a proactive, problem-solving approach. Throughout my adult life I have been working on issues that are affect the quality of everyday life: healthy food, economic self-sufficiency, the well being of children and families, healthcare, and education.

I believe it is the responsibility of the Board of Supervisors to manage the resources of the County for the greatest good of the greatest number of people well into the future. To achieve this, it is important to balance human, fiscal, and natural resources when making decisions. Some practical steps in this direction are:

  • Ensuring an open governmental process;
  • Engaging early with issues;
  • Listening to many ideas and points of view;
  • Planning ahead strategically;
  • Involving and empowering citizen stakeholders;
  • Promoting equal rights and fair treatment for all;
  • Keeping lines of communication open.

My experience on the senior management team at Planned Parenthood and as a member and chair of the Monterey Peninsula College Board of Trustees has strengthened my ability to address root causes, take principled positions and build the necessary board relationships to move ideas into action.
