TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS

By Kirk Colvin

Candidate for Governing Board Member; El Dorado Union High School District; Full Term

This information is provided by the candidate
  • Funds are tight, classrooms are crowded, the population is swelling, housing is mushrooming, the cost of living continues to climb--yet one thing remains unchanged: the kids are going to show up to class every day expecting an energetic teacher to help them prepare for life as an adult. The Board of Trustees must make certain that happens.
  • It's the Board's duty to find the money to run the schools properly. It's the Board's duty to look ahead five, ten, twenty years, and plan for the changes that are inevitable. It's the Board's duty to address personnel issues, maintenance issues, facility issues, overcrowding issues, before they become distractions to the learning process.
  • It's the Board's duty to "mind the store," so that nothing is wasted, lost, or "over spent." No district in this state can afford to be anything but completely diligent when it comes to budget management--our district is no exception. We expect our teachers to be the best, we expect the grounds keepers to be the best, and we should expect those who oversee our finances to be the best. Fiscal responsibility and accountability are not optional qualities: they're essential to keeping this district alive.

  • If I am elected to the School Board, I will do what voters expect: be responsible with public funds, spend them wisely, plan ahead, reduce waste to a minimum, use common sense, and use standard business practices. There's no excuse for sloppiness when it comes to managing the taxpayers' money.
