Public Safety

By Olden P. Henson

Candidate for Council Member; City of Hayward

This information is provided by the candidate
Public safety is my number one priority. A safe city inspires a good business climate as well as good schools.
Hayward has the benefit of having the two best public safety agencies in the state of California-our police and fire departments. Our crime rate in spite of what is purported , is among the safest U.S. cities in the 140,000 population category. Our fire department has saved numerous lives and continues to do so. I am proud of the men and women who serve us and place their lives in jeopardy on a daily basis. as the chairman of the National League of Cities Public safety Committee in 2000, I was able to secure thousands of public safety dollars for our city. I have testified 7 times before the U.S. Senate and Congress for to protect the necessities for public safety service. I have been selected on numerous occasions to provide the local perspective regarding homeland security issues. I am considered to be an authority on homeland security issues as it pertains to local governments. Working with former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, her officers and the National League of Cities staff, we set an agenda that lowered crime not only in Hayward but throughout the U.S. Partnerships with federal, state, local, and neighborhood entities, particularly Neighborhood Alert groups is the key to reducing crime. My father was a police officer, my brother is a Dallas, Texas detective and I followed as a policy person. I appreciate and support fully our men and women who serve and protect us in this capacity.
