Facilities-- just the beginning.

Students need modern classrooms, laboratories and athletic facilities, but they also need the support of the community to do their very best.
The past few years have been exciting ones for the SUHSD. District voters passed two much-needed bond measures to repair, renovate and construct facilities to make sure students can utilize modern classrooms, auditoriums, labs and athletic fields in the years to come. Now the community needs to step up to the plate to offer students less-tangible support, including job opportunities, academic tutoring, adequate counseling for students at risk of failing and safe, healthy environment where learning can take place. According to the most recent Census, nearly 50 percent of the county's residents speak a language other than English at home. More than 30 percent of those 25 years or older do not have a high school diploma. In parts of Salinas, the unemployment rate spirals to 25 percent during the winter months. These challenges are daunting, but we have incredible resources at our disposal, including dedicated teachers and staff, caring parents and community leaders, and diligent non-profits. The key is to create new partnerships so that we can work toward a common goal. My two decades of community work on behalf of Partners for Peace, Rotary, Safe Schools/Healthy Students, the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce and the faith community make me ideal for helping to facilitate a stronger link between the SUHSD board and these many, willing partners.
