I am a native Californian, a 3rd generation San Franciscan. My children, grandchildren and husband, John, were all born, reared and educated in California.

I grew up in San Francisco, attending public and private schools. I married then moved to the east coast in support of John's military career, eventually settling at Camp Pendleton in Southern California.

After leaving the military, our family returned to northern California. While my children were young, I developed an active interest in education and community life. Once the children were of school age, John and I embarked upon a series of successful family businesses, which we operated throughout the state. In the early stages of the development of our businesses, I was employed as a matron for the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department.

Over the course of my twenty-five years as a businesswoman in California, I owned and operated several businesses in varied industries, employing hundreds of Californians. These industries included auto repair, auto fleet maintenance, real estate investments and hospitality. As business owner and operator, my responsibilities included all aspects of management. I designed, restored and successfully operated one of California's earlier Bed & Breakfast establishments, the 17 room Sonoma Hotel.

My interest in education continued and was heightened at the time when my four children were attending junior high, high school and university. My desire to deepen participation in educational issues was realized when I was elected and re-elected to the Sonoma County Board of Education where I served for seventeen years between 1975 and 1992. Following my time on the county board, I was elected to the Sonoma Valley Unified School District Board where I served for four additional years from 1994 to 1998. As a board member, I passionately supported accelerated bilingual education, fiscal responsibility, and a well structured "Back to Basics" program for students.

I am currently enjoying life in northern California and am prepared for a new challenge. I am eager to apply my experiences in life and business to the betterment of California. I am poised and qualified to embark upon the Governorship of California.
