By Caren (Larson) Ray

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Lucia Mar Unified School District; Trustee Area 2

General- the "bottom up" leadership model
Reversing the leadership model of Lucia Mar Unified School District is a cornerstone idea of my campaign. Rather than the School Board making policy and dictating it downward, eventually reaching students at the bottom, leadership and policy should be focused on the base, the students and their needs, and establishing policy that supports them. Imagine a pyramid, with the School Board at the top. Below them, in order, are the Superintendent, then Administration, then Teachers and Classified staff, and finally, the largest group, the students, at the base. It is a harder process to start from the bottom up, but it forces the leadership to ask the right questions and prioritize expenditures of time and money most effectively and efficiently. Most importantly, it will unify support throughout the district on all levels, something Lucia Mar Unified is sorely lacking. The bottom-up approach will have everyone working together on the same basic assumptions- putting students first.

Candidate statement:

As an experienced teacher, local business owner, UCLA and AGHS graduate, I am uniquely aware of the current educational and fiscal issues facing our schools. Classroom-centered decision making must be the foundation of solutions for both. Students need access to materials, books and technology, and safe classrooms free from discipline problems and drugs. They need qualified, innovative teachers who are allowed to focus on classroom issues first and foremost. They need administration to make the needs of students and teachers their first priority. They need board members to consider the input of all stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents, administration and community members to create policy that most effectively and consistently produces these conditions. Placement of classrooms at the foundation of policy making will allow the School Board to lead us toward a culture of student-centered learning and innovation that will enable all Lucia Mar students to succeed.
