What Makes Arroyo Grande Special

By Joe Costello

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Arroyo Grande

This information is provided by the candidate
Some of the elements that shape our unique rural small town atmosphere
We are blessed with a rich tradition of farming in Arroyo Grande. Farmers have been growing produce here for over a century and farming is an important part of what makes Arroyo Grande special. Unfortunately the pressure to change farming acreage into house developments has increased tremendously. We have to make sure that Arroyo Grande's farmland is protected. I believe it is more important for our children's future to include farms and farmers than row upon row of $500,000 houses. We can and should develop the projects that make sense, that use available non-agriculture lands that fit available resources and, that bring a fair share of affordable housing opportunities to our community. I can and will support these projects.

The historic village of Arroyo Grande is another feature that makes Arroyo Grande a very special place. The Village must be treasured, nurtured and supported. It is a wonderful area for both residents and visitors. We must have standards that will allow the village to remain a focal point in the city. The village must be a place where people can shop or dine in an atmosphere not available elsewhere in Arroyo Grande. I will work to keep the Village a special place and to stimulate conditions that will encourage more people to experience, enjoy and patronize the village.
