Our history is what makes us. This includes our accomplishments and our experiences, but also the people behind us and the people who have gone before us. My family's history is replete with people who have helped to shape this country. Of particular note there is Admiral Stephen Rowan, USN, who planted the first American flag in California at Old Town, San Diego, on July 29th, 1846. My grandmother and campaign manager served as a meterologist for the US Navy during World War II, sang in the USO, served as a sherriff's deputy, and also worked for then-Senator Lyndon B. Johnson in Texas. My grandfather served in World War II as a Marine, and also served as a sherriff's deputy and as a firefighter. My uncle served in the US Navy. My mother is a self-made woman, having worked diligently and tirelessly to become an executive at an internationally-known company. I know that, despite my relative inexperience, I am surrounded by the history that each and every one of these fine people has produced, and that I will use this history and the pride I have in them to serve the city of San Marcos.
