Site-Based Management

By Chris J. Burr

Candidate for Board Member; Solana Beach Elementary School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Site-Based Management allows all interested parties in the education process to contribute to the overall success of the Solana Beach School District.
The success of the Solana Beach School District begins with a strong Mission Statement: "The Mission of the Solana Beach School District is to provide a child-centered education of the highest quality, utilizing the unique resources of home, school, and community to ensure a stable learning environment rigorous in academic standards, rich in diversity, sensitive to individual needs, and committed to developing compassionate children who are confident, competent and creative learners." The student's best interest is always the number one priority of the Board, the District, and the Site. Academic successs in the District is evidenced by test scores that continually are among the highest in the state. These are reflective of an incredibly dedicated teaching and support staff, and a parent population whose volunteer efforts are second to none. This atmosphere is fostered by the District's dedication to site-based management.

Site-based management allows the successful partnering of home, school and community as each segment of this population is given an extraordinary opportunity to be heard. At each site the principal is afforded the ability to identify the unique needs of her or his school and, along with parents and community partners, determine how best to utilize the available resources, both human and monetary, to achieve the objectives.

I have had children in the Solana Beach School District for the past nine years, and I have had the extraordinary privilege to be involved in this process through the implementation of new and innovative programs (Dad's Club), through involvement in Site Council (2 terms including President 1999-2000), and as a Rolling Reader volunteer for the past five years. There is always more participation and "buy-in" when individuals have a voice. Site-based management gives people that voice and is one of the foundations of the Solana Beach School District's past and continued success.
