Testing and Accountability

By Dean Reece

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Maria Joint Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Testing and accountability is becoming more important as the state continues to place additional requirement on local schools. The district, staff and parents play an integral roll in this process.
Everyone wants someone to be accountable for public education. One method implemented by the state is to require written statewide standards of teaching to be adopted by all school districts. The high school district has adopted the state standards and is in the process of realigning curriculum to reflect the state standards. Teachers must begin to teach the adopted standards because students will be tested on those standards via statewide tests. School districts will be "graded" on the degree of success or failure of students to meet testing benchmarks established by the state. Parents need to ask teachers and school administrators how their school is organized to meet these requirements.
