My direct approach on the Board has contributed to a more open and better informed education policy making process. I believe that candor-- always with decorum-- serves the public interest and strengthens institutions of local governance in public education.

EXCELLENCE AND EQUITY

The Board of Education put the following statement at the top of its list of focus goals for 2002. " We are committed to closing the gap between various subgroups of students in all measures of student achievement.?

I supported this commitment, and I supported instituting the Brazosport program at five local schools. Its successes in closing the gap have won national acclaim.

At the same time, I am committed to ensuring the highest quality curriculum and instruction for mainstream, honors and GATE students.

Our schools must truly serve ALL children.
