Political Philosophy....

Dear Ventura Voter,

On November 6, 2001 you will have the opportunity to go to the polls and vote for a new school board to serve the Ventura Unified School District. I want to take a moment to tell you what I have helped to accomplish during my tenure and what I want to accomplish over the next four years with your support.

Accomplishments...

· Moved district from bankruptcy to solid financial status

· Passage of much needed school bond

· Built two new schools and rebuilt two others

· Implemented current massive modernization program

· Implementation of state recognized Character Development Program

· World class expanded Adult Education Program

· Increased employee salaries 30% since 1996

· Maintained benefits for all employees

· Most California Distinguished Schools in district size category

· Hired new "local" standout Superintendent Dr. Trudy Arriaga this year

· Advocated for new technology initiative resulting in expanded role of computers and telephones in every classroom (underway)

· Advocated and participate in collaborative new partnerships with City of Ventura

· Increased student test scores and achievement

· Reduced VUSD high school dropout rate by 45% since 1996

Objectives over next four years...

· Maintain prudent spending on modernization efforts

· Insure district curriculum matches California State Standards, reflecting local values

· Expand city, county and state collaborative partnerships

· Expand school safety for students and employees

· Improve test scores to insure success for all students

· Insure maximum efforts to maintain district financial health

· Improve employee salaries and benefits

· Increase parent involvement with students and local schools

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you during my tenure. Now more than ever we need to support our new superintendent. I want to ensure she is given the opportunity to succeed.

The key ingredient I have offered the board during my term is business experience. We must continue the focus on running the district with a business perspective while remembering our customers are our children, parents and community. I would appreciate your vote.

Sincerely,

John Walker
