My Service as a Director

By William R. Berkman

Candidate for Director; Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District

This information is provided by the candidate
I am pleased to have served the residents of Sausalito and Marin City for 6 years as one of their elected representatves on the governing Board of the Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District. During that time the Board has demonstrated environmental sensitivity and concerns.

The District provides sewage treatment and wastewater disposal through operation of its publicly owned treatment plant and collection system. Discharge by the District of the treated wastewater into the San Francisco Bay is authorized by a permit issued by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board. The permit system is one of the mechanisms under the Clean Water Act to clean up the nation's waterways. The permit contains conditions on the types and amounts of pollutants that can be discharged. Violations can result in fines or penalties. Wet weather conditions that increase the wastewater flow to the plant can cause permit violations.

During my 6 years of service on the Board, I have worked with the other Directors to develop and implement policies and programs to
  1. support the ability of the District to fully comply
with applicable regulations and permit conditions,
  2. provide fair and equitable charges and rates to
    District residents and other customers,
  3. support efforts to reduce or eliminate permit
violations (and associated fines or penalties), and
  4. enhance the efficiency of District administration
    and operations.
I will continue these efforts in my service on the Board.
