Donald E. Summers

Don Summers is a Lecturer in Financial Management in the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy (GSBPP), Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). In this capacity, he teaches financial and managerial accounting courses. He is also serving as the Program Manager for the International Defense Acquisition Resource Management (IDARM) Program. Prior to assuming his current position, he was the Director of Distance Learning and Program Manager for the International Health Resources Management Program with the Institute for Defense Education and Analysis (IDEA), NPS. He was also engaged in the development of the TRICARE Financial Management Education Program (TFMEP) with the Systems Management Department, NPS

He was born in Denver, Colorado on August 21, 1951. He attended the University of Southern Colorado, where he majored in Business Administration. In March of 1973 he was awarded the degree Bachelor of Science and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He was graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in June 1985, earning the degree Master of Science in Financial Management. He was designated a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) in May 1993.

Prior to joining the Naval Postgraduate School, he was the Business Manager and Executive Assistant to Mr. William J. Agee, Chairman and CEO of Morrison Knudsen Corporation in Carmel, California. In this capacity he had various financial and management responsibilities. He also served as the special projects officer for the Chairman/CEO of this Fortune 500 international engineering, construction, mining, and transportation company. Don began his private sector career as a Senior Financial Analyst with Household Credit Services in Salinas, California. He is a member of the Accounting faculty at Golden Gate University.

He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel in July1993 after serving twenty years. His command experience included: Commanding Officer of a Rifle Platoon, Rifle Company, Headquarters and Service Company, and Executive Officer/Deputy Camp Commander Camp Fuji, Japan. Staff tours included: Aide-de-Camp to Major General Richard C. Schulze, Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego; Assistant Operations Officer; and Program Budget Coordinator for the Chief Financial Officer, Headquarters Marine Corps. In 1989, he joined the Staff and Faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School. In this capacity he was a Systems Management faculty member teaching Financial and Managerial Accounting, coordinated numerous senior level conferences, served as the assistant Dean of Students for Marine Corps matters, and was the Director of the Marine Corps Practical Comptrollership Course.

He is married to the former Claudia Megarr. They have two children, Steven and Kathryn.
