Santa Rosa's water supply is too important to be used as a political issue. Santa Rosa's water supply is secure.Water is a controversial issue now because some people are telling us that we don't have enough. That is not true. Santa Rosa has all the water behind Warm Springs Dam that we need to maintain our quality of life. The problem is that our transport system is antiquated and needs to be expanded. That will take a few years. So during the interim we will need to create new storage capacity. We will also need to conserve on those few very hot days when water usage peaks. Speaking of conservation, the City of Santa Rosa has done a wonderful job at water conservation. Our city is allotted 50 million gallons a day (mgd) and never have we used more than 32 mgd. We have an excellent retrofit program, leak detection program and we are constantly expanding our large-acreage irrigation with recycled water. We are also drilling wells for emergency back up. Now, having said all that, I will add that, even if we had all 50mgd at our disposal right now, we should conserve water. All of us who live in California remember droughts and understand that water will always be at a premium in our state. If we never built another house or business, conservation should be as much a part of our daily lives as recycling. |
