Candidate for Governing Board Member; San Juan Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
This is a brief description of Jim Livingston's background and qualifications.
My family and I have lived in the San Juan district since 1968. Lyn, my wife, and I have been married since 1960. We have four children who attended six San Juan schools and all have completed higher education degrees.

My education includes earned degrees from four universities in four states including a Doctoral degree with a major in Educational Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.

My professional career has been in education. I have 24 years experience in the State University System at CSU Sacramento as a University Professor, University Administrator, and Educational Consultant at the local, state, national, and international levels. This includes two years in Brazil as a consultant to the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture in Brasilia.

Experience also includes fourteen years in the Iowa and California public schools as a secondary school teacher of physics and biology, wrestling coach, high school counselor, and administrator.

Graduate teaching includes school finance, personnel administration, organization theory, and systematic planning for proposals and grants in addition to coordinating and administering related programs

Public service includes experience on the Sacramento County Office of Education Board of Trustees, the Carmichael Water District Board, a School Site Council and as Troop Committee Chair for the Boy Scouts of America.

I worked in an advisory capacity to the Commission for Teacher Credentials and I served on the editorial review board for the Journal of The California Association of Professors of Educational Administration. I am currently a member of the Advisory Committee of the Chapman University Teaching and Administrative Services Credential Programs.

I served as board president twice during two terms and worked successfully to bring millions of dollars of new funding to the district for instructional programs and building repairs. I promote academic excellence and advocate safe schools free from drugs and violence while seeking adequate funding and insisting upon academic and fiscal accountability.

I will continue to emphasize the development of self-esteem, the desire to learn, and positive attitudes toward getting along with other persons.

As board president, I nurtured a spirit of cooperation among board members, employees and community members. The success of any governing board is dependent upon the ability of members to work together. I will continue to encourage cooperative problem solving and rational decision-making.

The district has received many well-deserved accolades while I have been a member of the board. I am pleased that I was helpful in creating the conditions that allowed the district to achieve so well.

Please join me in the effort to maintain those conditions and to create new opportunities for the district through your support for my reelection. Thank you for your consideration.
