Gay Jones, Sacramento District Metropolitan Fire Board, District 8

Participating in our political process and working in public service is an established right in this country which is sometimes taken for granted, but not for this candidate. I have worked and traveled in countries where citizens are murdered for just registering to vote. When one sees people struggling for basic self determination in other countries, participating in the election profess takes on a very deep significance.

Working as a Peace Corps volunteer had many challenges and benefits. One of those benefits was solidifying my appreciation for the inalienable rights that we as citizens enjoy in the United States. To run for an elected office is a tremendous occasion.

This last August, I volunteered as a counselor for "Firefighters Kids Camp," as I have done for many summers. The children who attend the camp are burn survivors and they are very inspirational. I mention this because I want my constituency to realize that fire protection for our community is not just paper and policy for me. It translates into very real people and personalities for this candidate. We need the best possible outcomes for all our families and neighbors. I will work to the best of my ability to achieve this high standard.

Once in a while opportunities are given to us where we can match our talents and experience with an existing need. Serving as a director for the new Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is such an opportunity for me.

My 25 years of Public Service - 19 of those years in the Fire Service - will enable me to contribute back to my community. Both experience in administration as well as in the "field" make my candidacy the best choice for shaping our community's fire protection.

As an original homeowner in our neighborhood, and as a founding member of the Butterfield/Riviera East Community Association, I am a stake-holder, And as a stakeholder, I will take great pride in serving District 8 to continue to improve the level of excellence in Fire Service that we all deserve.
