Shall an ordinance be adopted setting the compensation of the elected City Treasurer equal to that received by any elected City Council Member, as set forth by State law, to take effect on March 6, 2001?

Impartial Analysis from the City Attorney
The City Treasurer of the City of South Gate is an elected official currently earning $76,500, plus benefits. Measure HH seeks to reduce this salary and place the City Treasurer's salary equal to the salary received by any member of the South Gate City Council. State law sets forth the salaries of City Council Members based upon the city's population. The current salary of a City Council Member is $600 per month.

If Measure HH is adopted, the City would realize a savings in excess of $69,300.

If Measure HH is adopted, the new salary would apply to any individuals elected to the position of City Treasurer starting March, 2001 and thereafter.

If Measure HH is adopted, salary increases for the City Treasurer would correspond to the City Council's salary as authorized by State law.

A "yes" vote would reduce the salary of the City Treasurer to the amount of $7,200 per year. A "no" vote would maintain the City Treasurer's salary at $76,500 per year.
