School Sites Must be Maintained and Repaired

By Joseph Wilson

Candidate for Board Member; Fresno Unified School District; Trustee Area 6

This information is provided by the candidate
When a school site is not maintained, it is an unsafe and poor environment for effective learning. As a trustee I will work with facilities to help improve all school sites through out the district.
What are we saying to our students when the school system fails to maintain its facilities. The message is subtle and clear. Students are not valued by this school system. That message must change, all school sites throughout the district must be repaired and maintained.

Students and the community around each school site need to be able feel proud of the school facility in their area. It should serve as an emblem of pride for each neighborhood. If the school system fails to maintain its facilities they become an eye sore and look like many of the other poorly maintained buildings in the neighborhood. Pride in our school facilities must be restored.

The district in the last two years has started a program of repairing facilities but not all of the schools are included in this process. The next major goal is to get this program started for the high schools throughout the district. Teenagers are hard on facilities. If damage is not fixed immediately it continues until the facility is falling apart. The boards needs to fund the high school maintence van as soon as possible.

This district has many facilities that are over 40 years old. If they are maintained and repaired they can continue to serve this community for many years to come. This must become a priority of the school board in order to enhance the learning environment throughout the district.
