Kids, our community's greastes resource!

By Kelsey K. Stewart

Candidate for Board Member; Fresno Unified School District; Trustee Area 5

Our children are our greatest resource. Let's not waste it.
The City of Fresno has a vision to continue growth "in, up, and back south," in order to minimize the use of additional agricultural land. I believe this vision will take active participation by board members in order to minimize negative impact on schools in effected areas. We must provide for the growth that will result in the interior of the City. Our board members need to work closely with City leaders in planning for the future of our children and schools.

It must begin with the members of the Board of Education, and the Superintendent. We need to put before the voters another bond campaign. The timing of the bond campaign is critical. A timeline must be developed. Information on the last bond campaign must be provided in the form of information stating precisely what the District did with the money and how much longer the community will need to wait before that bond's projects are completed. At the current time, some voters and schools are unhappy with what they believe has put their campus last to be improved from the last campaign.

A publicity effort must be mounted to provide accurate information on expenses and for what they were expended. The District needs an opportunity to "brag" about the accomplishments of the last campaign.

Secondarily, we must work with City leaders and businesses to provide a timeline for the campaign, including when the voters will be prepared to pass another campaign. I am troubled that the Chamber of Commerce had to bring this to the attendtion of the Board. Having been on two steering committees for the last campaigns, I know the that timing is everything. Passing a bond campaign is a lot of hard work, and can seem endless to those working directly on the campaign.

It is paramount the Board take into consideration of all the ramifications before sending it to the public for endorsement. Sensitivity to these issues is paramount.
