BUILDING AND NURTURING AN EXCELLENT FACULTY AND STAFF

By John Shropshire

Candidate for Board Member; Fresno Unified School District; Trustee Area 6

This information is provided by the candidate
Excellence in education is dependent on building and nuturing a superior faculty and staff. Visit the classroom of any of our "master" teachers and you will find excited, disciplined children challenged to their fullest potential. Quality education is achieved through teaching, not by placing a blind reliance on higher test scores, curriculum fads or heavy-handed policies. Therefore, we must commit to putting our resources behind a strong faculty and staff.

As a member of the Fresno Unified School Board, I will advocate for policies to nurture and recognize the teachers and staff within our system by rewarding their hard work and dedication, providing incentives to keep them in the classroom and encouraging them to expand upon their skill and creativity. I will support our principals by assuring that the district provides them with the tools and freedom they need to run the schools. I will also push for the development of an aggressive, structured recruitment effort to attract additional top quality personnel from among "master" and novice teachers. This includes active cooperation with colleges and universities. I will promote training programs for our novice teachers to ensure that the quality of teaching remains consistently high throughout the district. To make sure the needs of the students are met all year long, I will work to develop policies to improve the quality of summer school and resources for special needs students.
