A longtime democrat, Jack Gibson was first elected to the Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) Board in 1994, winning almost 70% of the vote. He was reelected without opposition in 1998. During his tenure on the MMWD board, Jack has established a strong record as a fiscal watchdog and environmental steward. He helped streamline MMWD bureacracy, reduced the budget, opposed rate increases, backed aggressive water conservation measures, and supported a comprehensive fishery restoration program for Lagunitas Creek. Following his first year on the board, MMWD was named "Most Improved Public Agency" by the Marin United Taxpayers Association.

Jack is a strong advocate for public safety. In 1997, he co-chaired Marin's "Fire Flow" measure which fire chiefs and the Marin Independent Journal called the "most important public safety measure in the last 20 years." Jack has supported important fire prevention elements of MMWD's Vegetation Management Plan, and was tapped by the Marin County Board of Supervisors to serve on the Adult Criminal Justice Commission.

In several key areas -- education, seniors, the Latino community -- Jack has a unique firsthand perspective. He understands the needs of our public education system, for example, from his eight years as a public school teacher and a member of the American Federation of Teachers.

Jack has a long history of community involvement. He has served on the Marin Democratic Central Committee and is a member and officer of the Central Marin Rotary Club. He serves on the board of directors for Exodus (a nonprofit serving autistic children), and works with the Latino Film Festival, Mount Tamalpais Watershed Fund, and the Community Institute of Psychotherapy. He has also been an active supporter of his wife Yolanda Gibson's work as a member of the Marin County Women's Commission, Vice President of the Pan American Lions Club, the Latin American Women's Association, Marin Latino Forum, Latino Democratic Club, and Marin Friends of Women.

Jack and Yolanda have lived in San Anselmo for the past 26 years. They have two daughters, Nora and Cindy.
