One morning in the early summer of 1996. Jerry Duncan awoke to read a frightening headline in the Fresno Bee. A horrible traffic accident on Friant Road had occurred the night before and had taken the death toll on that stretch of road to 14 people killed in the previous 14 months. According to Jerry," I knew that there must be something that could be done. It was then I decided to get involved. My uncle Bob and my late father Dick had taught me through their involvement in so much of what is good about Fresno that if you have something to offer that can help, then get to work."

As owner of Quick-Signs, Jerry designed, made and with the permission of the land owners, installed the warning signs along Friant Road that are still up today. "The purpose of the signs is to get people to think a little bit more about safety as they drive down Friant Road. Many times all it takes to avoid an accident is just a little more alertness."

But Jerry's involvement wasn't finished. "It was quite clear that much more needed to be done. Especially after 2 more people died and I had to change the numbers on the signs from 14 to 16 just a couple of weeks after the signs went up. That was one of the hardest things I have ever done because those numbers represented real human lives."

Through a lot of hard work Jerry got several government agencies together, and a thorough review of all the options to improve safety was done. "There was some reluctance on the part of some of the agencies to get involved but after I got them to understand what this was all about they really got behind the project."

The result was several changes that improved safety including additional warning signs that Jerry donated, increased traffic enforcement and DUI checkpoints, an old car donated by Hallowell Chevrolet that was painted black and white and is parked in the town of Friant, some improved lane markers and the donation by Jerry of two portable radar guns for C.H.P. motorcycle units.

The results have been rewarding. At the time the program was implemented there were 17 fatalities on Friant Road over a prior 17 month period. Since then there has been over a 90% reduction.

As a firm believer that it is important to get involved, Jerry has served in many community organizations. He was the first President of Fresno County Children's Services Network and recently completed his second term as President of the Park Fort Washington Homeowners Association (The Dominion) . He is currently Vice-President of The Fresno State Quarterback Club where he has served on the board since 1995 and serves on the board of directors of Crime Stoppers and The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. He is also an Advisory Board Member for the new House of Hope Renaissance Charter School which is just getting started.

Jerry's resume of over 23 years of successful business experience includes 12 years as Product Marketing and Advertising Manager at Duncan Enterprises, founder and owner of Quick-Signs until 1998. He is currently President of two companies, Pro-Screen, Inc. and Mega-Prints, Inc., both located in Fresno.

When asked what the voters of District 6 will get if they vote for Jerry Duncan, Jerry replied, "As a member of the city council, I will work hard to bring together the extraordinary talents that exist within this great city and get everyone moving together as a team. Even people of radically different views can work together if what they believe in common is identified it becomes the starting point of moving forward together under a common goal."

"What the people of district 6 will get is an honest person who works hard at listening and is experienced in building a consensus. I am someone who respects each point of view and will not be an embarrassment to our city. If I am elected to the City Council, the best interests of the City will always come first. Remember, if you have something to offer that can help, then get to work."
